WhatsApp Hijacking Cases Surge, N-CERT Issues Alert

N-CERT Warns Pakistanis About Rising WhatsApp Account Hijacking Threats

ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – WhatsApp Hijacking, Pakistan has witnessed a worrying surge in WhatsApp account hijacking incidents, prompting the National Computer Emergency Response Team (National CERT or N-CERT) to issue a nationwide alert.

According to N-CERT, cybercriminals are taking over users’ WhatsApp accounts using fake calls, phishing links, one-time passwords (OTPs), and QR codes. The alert warns that these attacks are not limited to individual users; business and office accounts are also at high risk.

Attackers often impersonate WhatsApp support staff, telecom employees, or even acquaintances of the user to gain sensitive information. Once an account is hijacked, criminals use the victim’s identity to commit fraud, send fake messages, and extort money.

Key warning signs of a compromised account include suspicious logouts, unknown linked devices, and receiving unsolicited OTPs.

N-CERT has instructed users not to share their WhatsApp codes, PINs, or QR codes with anyone. It also recommended enabling two-step verification and linking a recovery email to secure accounts. Affected users are advised to reinstall WhatsApp, reverify their number, and immediately report any suspicious activity.
