WhatsApp Enhances Typing Indicator in Group Chats for Android Users

WhatsApp has not yet announced an official release date for all users.

ISLAMABAD — WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new update for Android users that improves the typing indicator feature in group chats, offering greater visibility into group activity and enhancing the overall user experience.

According to WABetaInfo, a reliable source for WhatsApp developments, the feature is currently available through Android beta version 2.25.20.17 via the Google Play Store.

What’s New?

Previously, when multiple members in a group chat were typing simultaneously, WhatsApp displayed only a single name in the preview — for example, “Ali is typing…”. This often left users unaware of how active a conversation really was.

With the latest update, that has changed. WhatsApp now shows a dynamic typing indicator such as “2 people are typing…” in the chat list preview. This small yet meaningful enhancement allows users to gauge group engagement before opening a conversation — especially useful in highly active chats.

“This update adds a layer of transparency and convenience, especially for those managing busy group discussions,” the WABetaInfo report noted.

However, this new typing indicator only applies to text messages. If multiple users are recording voice notes simultaneously, WhatsApp will continue to display just one name, as in the previous version.

Gradual Rollout

The feature is currently available to a limited number of beta testers, with a broader rollout expected in the coming weeks. WhatsApp has not yet announced an official release date for all users.
