WhatsApp Announces Four New Group Chat Features for 3.3 Billion Users
Four New WhatsApp Features Aim to Simplify Group Conversations
The Meta-owned messaging platform said the updates would become available to users worldwide over the coming weeks, adding new ways to organise group conversations and keep members connected.
One of the major changes concerns pinned messages. Currently, pinned messages in group chats remain visible for a maximum of 30 days before expiring. Under the new update, WhatsApp is introducing a “No Expiration” option, allowing members to keep important messages pinned indefinitely.
The second feature, called History Sharing, will enable group members to share recent chat history with people who are newly added to a group. The feature will be optional, and WhatsApp says shared messages will remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
WhatsApp is also introducing group-specific status updates. The feature will allow members to share photos and other updates directly within a particular group, where fellow members can view and react to them. These statuses will automatically disappear after 24 hours.
The company clarified that group statuses will only be visible to members of the relevant group and will remain separate from users’ regular individual status updates.
The fourth update is an unread message filter designed to help users manage busy group conversations. It will allow members to quickly locate unread messages in which they have been mentioned or directly replied to, without scrolling through lengthy chat histories.
The feature could be particularly helpful for users who mute multiple groups or receive a large number of messages throughout the day, making it easier to identify conversations that require their attention.
