WAPDA funds girls’ schools in Diamer Basha area
WAPDA allocates Rs.123.73 million to boost girls’ education
Diamer: (Web Desk) – The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has approved significant funding to promote education, with a particular focus on girls, in the Diamer Basha Dam Project area. On March 24, 2026, WAPDA sanctioned Rs. 94.23 million to support 75 schools under the Community Based Accelerated Learning Schools (CBALS) programme, ensuring continued primary education for 2,250 out-of-school girls in Chilas, Tangir, and Darel.
These schools, operated in partnership with the READ Foundation, were at risk of closure due to funding shortages. Under the new arrangement, WAPDA, the Education Department Gilgit-Baltistan, and the READ Foundation will jointly oversee the schools for the next three years, providing structured support and supervision.

In addition, WAPDA has allocated Rs. 29.5 million for the rehabilitation of five government schools in Tangir and Darel, including essential facilities, furniture, stationery, and the provision of two coasters to transport students safely. This initiative follows a proposal from the Gilgit Baltistan Scouts and will be implemented under joint supervision with the Education Department GB and GB Scouts.
WAPDA has previously supported education in District Diamer through several major projects, including the establishment of Cadet College Chilas at Rs. 2.10 billion and an Army Public School Thor at Rs. 22.6 million. Government schools in Tangir and Darel have also been upgraded, with additional educational initiatives in the pipeline.
These measures reflect WAPDA’s ongoing commitment to promoting quality education, improving facilities, and increasing access for girls in remote areas of Gilgit-Baltistan.
