Shehbaz stresses economic growth impossible without peace
Islamabad-(Mudassar Iqbal)-Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif led a federal cabinet meeting today, tackling pressing national issues. The meeting addressed national security concerns, political developments, and economic measures.
The premier began by paying a heartfelt tribute to Major Hamza Israr and Sepoy Muhammad Naeem, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight against terrorism in North Waziristan. This poignant moment underscored the government’s commitment to honoring the nation’s heroes.
During the meeting, key ministers, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, Interior Minister, Finance Minister, Law Minister, and Information Minister, gathered to discuss vital national matters. The Central Apex Committee on National Action Plan also met to address pressing security concerns.
He lauded the armed forces, emphasizing that the sacrifices of young officers and soldiers are vital for the nation’s peace and stability. “A 29-year-old major gave his life for the country. It is our duty to honour and respect these sacrifices,” he stated.
Highlighting the significance of security, PM Sharif stressed that economic growth is impossible without peace. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to countering extremism, stating that those challenging the state’s authority will be dealt with firmly.
Addressing the political situation, Shehbaz revealed that the government had accepted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) offer for dialogue and even formed a committee for negotiations. However, the PTI backed out of the scheduled meeting on January 28, refusing to participate, he added.
They ran away after setting the date. We said we will respond to them in writing,” he said, adding that past political investigations, including those from 2018, were never pursued properly. He also questioned why the PTI’s 2014 sit-in is overlooked when discussing political matters.
“The committee formed for investigation in 2018 did not hold a single meeting,” he remarked, adding that they should look at their own conduct first. “We are ready to form a house committee.”
“If they talk about November 26, 2024, then the 2014 sit-in should also be considered. We sincerely want the negotiations to move forward,” he stressed.
On the economic front, PM Shehbaz welcomed the 1% reduction in interest rates but stated that a 2% cut would have been more beneficial for economic growth. He emphasised that Pakistan cannot afford further economic losses, urging a stable financial environment.
The premier expressed deep concern over human trafficking, which has led to the loss of Pakistani lives abroad and damaged the country’s reputation. He stressed that the government is taking strict action against human smuggling networks and will not engage in discussions with China or other stakeholders until such illegal activities are eradicated.
