Wall Street Journal Slams Modi Govt Over Minority Rights in India
Experts noted that the Modi government cannot escape responsibility for the violence targeting minorities.
WASHINGTON: The Wall Street Journal has strongly criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government for the worsening situation of religious minorities in the country. The report highlights that both Muslims and Christians are facing growing discrimination and violence under Modi’s administration.
The Journal described the ruling BJP government as promoting a Hindutva agenda that favors the Hindu majority while marginalizing minorities. Since 2014, Muslims in India have reportedly faced discrimination in housing, education, employment, and even voting rights.
Christians, who make up only 2.3 percent of India’s population, have also been targeted. In 2025, 706 anti-Christian incidents were recorded, including attacks on churches, assaults during prayers, and destruction of Christmas decorations. While these attacks occurred, Modi reportedly visited a church but did not publicly condemn the violence, sending a concerning message to extremist groups.
The report also criticized anti-conversion laws, police inaction, and the state’s indirect support of violence against minorities. According to the Journal, religious minorities across India now face systematic and symbolic attacks, while the country’s secular principles have been increasingly undermined.

Specific incidents highlighted include attacks on churches in Uttar Pradesh, assaults on vulnerable individuals, and vandalism of Christmas decorations in Chhattisgarh. The U.S. Commission on Religious Freedom has reportedly recommended labeling India as a “Country of Particular Concern” due to ongoing religious violence and state inaction.
Experts noted that the Modi government cannot escape responsibility for the violence targeting minorities. Critics say India’s secular framework has been weakened, extremist groups operate with impunity, and the government largely remains silent.
The Wall Street Journal’s report emphasizes growing global concern over India’s treatment of minorities under Modi’s Hindu nationalist policies, portraying the country as increasingly intolerant toward religious minorities.
