Virat Kohli Joins World Bowling League as Strategic Investor, Boosting Sport’s Global Aspirations
Kohli Joins World Bowling League: “Started Bowling at 11”
NEW DELHI — In a groundbreaking move that could redefine the global perception of bowling, Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli has joined the proposed World Bowling League (WBL) as a strategic investor. The announcement marks a significant boost for the league, which aims to reimagine bowling as a high-profile international sport.
“The World Bowling League is pleased to announce cricketing icon Virat Kohli as a strategic investor in the league, igniting a bold new chapter to elevate the sport of bowling,” the league’s organisers said in a statement released on Wednesday.
Kohli, one of the most influential athletes in the world and the third-most followed athlete on Instagram behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, brings global attention and star power to the new venture.
A Lifelong Passion for Bowling
“I started bowling when I was 11 years old, spinning the ball by 12,” said Kohli in a statement issued by League Sports Co., which owns the WBL. “It is evident how popular the sport is while being under-appreciated as a business proposition. I’m thrilled to join the WBL as an investor and partner.”
While best known for his cricketing prowess, Kohli’s affinity for sports and entrepreneurship is well-established. He owns a team in the E1 World Championship power-boat series and holds a stake in Indian Super League football club FC Goa.
League Gains Momentum
The World Bowling League is still in its early stages, with franchises and a competition schedule yet to be announced. It will feature mixed-gender teams, reflecting a modern and inclusive approach to the sport.
Kohli joins Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts, who previously purchased the league’s first officially announced team, as high-profile early backers.

“When I discovered Virat is also a bowler, it was exciting to align on this new-age vision for the sport,” said Adi K. Mishra, Founder and CEO of League Sports Co. “Every week, we uncover more about bowling’s global depth and fascinating history — it’s a sleeping giant we’re ready to awaken.”
Kohli’s New Sporting Focus
Kohli, 36, retired from Test cricket earlier this month and now plays only in limited-overs internationals. His pivot toward sports investment reflects a growing trend among elite athletes extending their influence beyond the playing field.
With Kohli’s involvement, the WBL looks poised to tap into India’s vast sporting fanbase while boosting its global ambitions.
