Virat Kohli Fined 20% of Match Fee After On-Field Clash with Sam Konstas

Melbourne: India’s cricket star Virat Kohli has been fined 20% of his match fee and handed one demerit point by the ICC following an on-field altercation with Australia’s debutant, Sam Konstas, during the fourth Test in Melbourne. The incident occurred in the 10th over of Australia’s innings when Kohli and the 19-year-old Konstas collided and exchanged words. The altercation was quickly separated by Australia’s Usman Khawaja and the on-field umpires, Joel Wilson and Michael Gough.

The ICC confirmed that Kohli violated Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to “inappropriate physical contact with a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee, or any other person during an international match.” Kohli accepted the sanctions without the need for a formal hearing.

This is Kohli’s first offence in a 24-month period, and the fine could have been as high as 50% of his match fee. Konstas, reflecting on the incident after the day’s play, downplayed it, stating, “Virat Kohli accidentally bumped into me, that’s cricket and can happen with tension.”
