Viral Post-Match Ceremony Incident at Tri-Series Leaves Fans in Stitches
KARACHI: A post-match ceremony from the ongoing tri-nation ODI series between Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa has left fans laughing uncontrollably after a video went viral for all the wrong reasons. The incident occurred after New Zealand defeated South Africa in the second match of the series, securing their spot in the final.
In the now-infamous video, an official can be seen presenting the ‘Catch of the Match’ award, worth 1 lakh PKR (approx. Rs 31,000), to South Africa’s all-rounder Wiaan Mulder. However, the official made an unfortunate blunder by holding the oversized check vertically while posing for a picture with Mulder.
Realizing the mistake, Mulder politely urged the official to hold the check horizontally for a proper photograph. Instead of correcting the positioning, the official proceeded to hold the check upside down, only for Mulder to gently correct him once again.
The award was presented to Mulder for his stunning catch during the match, where he dismissed New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell. Mitchell attempted to clear the long-off boundary off a full-length delivery by Senuran Muthusamy, but Mulder took a remarkable catch, diving down to his left near the boundary line.
Fans quickly took to social media, with many expressing their amusement at the quirky post-match moment. The video has since gained widespread attention, and the hashtag #JustPakistanThings trended as viewers joked about the mix-up.
Meanwhile, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance after securing their place in the final, emphasizing the importance of fielding, especially on flat wickets. He acknowledged the contributions from various players, particularly Devon Conway and Kane Williamson, in guiding New Zealand to victory.
“It’s pleasing to see different guys performing. We pride ourselves on fielding, especially in the middle overs on flat wickets where partnerships can develop. Conway’s knock and his partnership with Kane were outstanding,” Santner said post-match, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
On the other hand, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma found some positives in his team’s performance despite the defeat. He highlighted debutant Matthew Breetzke’s brilliant 150-run innings, noting that the team needed to improve their batting and bowling in future matches.

“There were some positives. Matty on debut scoring 150 was amazing. We need to improve our batting and bowling, but we’ll take the positives from this match,” Bavuma said.
The tri-nation ODI series continues, with New Zealand advancing to the final. Fans are eagerly awaiting the next exciting matches, while social media continues to buzz with laughter over the viral mishap during the award ceremony.
