Van Nistelrooy Stays Focused on Europa League Despite Amorim’s Imminent Arrival
Manchester United-(Foreign Correspondent): Ruud van Nistelrooy remains focused on his current responsibilities at Manchester United, despite the soon-expected arrival of Ruben Amorim as the club’s new permanent manager.
In a pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday’s Europa League game against Greek team PAOK, Van Nistelrooy revealed that he has not yet discussed his future with Amorim, who is set to take over at Old Trafford on November 11. The Dutch coach, who took on the temporary managerial role after Erik ten Hag’s recent departure, responded to questions about Amorim, stating, “No, I didn’t have contact so far, there are no changes in that.”
Since stepping in, the former United striker has managed two notable outcomes: a 5-2 victory over Leicester in the League Cup and a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League. However, his immediate focus is on securing a crucial win in Europe. Despite United’s sluggish start in the Europa League, where they’ve drawn all three of their opening matches, Van Nistelrooy stressed the importance of Thursday’s match against PAOK at Old Trafford.
“For now, the main priority for the club is getting the work done daily and preparing for the upcoming game in Europe,” he said.
Although Van Nistelrooy has previously expressed interest in staying on with the club, he acknowledged the uncertainty around his role once Amorim takes charge. “It’s hard to comment on that now; I’m waiting for conversations to take place,” he added.
Meanwhile, Manchester United received encouraging news about young defender Leny Yoro’s recovery from injury. The 18-year-old, signed from Lille in July for a fee that could reach €70 million, joined team training for the first time in three months after suffering a pre-season metatarsal injury that required surgery.
Van Nistelrooy was optimistic about Yoro’s return, stating, “He’s been carefully managed after his pre-season injury, which was always going to be a lengthy recovery, and it’s a significant step forward for him.”
As Van Nistelrooy leads United in the days before Amorim’s arrival, attention now turns to the team’s Europa League performance against PAOK.
