USAID’s HumAhang Hosts Conference on Human Rights and Peace

ISLAMABAD: The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) HumAhang project, in collaboration with the Center for Peace and Development Initiatives (CPDI), has successfully concluded a two-day conference focused on “Human Rights as the Foundation for Sustainable Peace.” The event, held in Pakistan, brought together an influential group of policymakers, academics, activists, and civil society leaders to address the critical role of human rights in creating lasting peace and social justice in the country.

The conference, which was well-attended, delved into several pressing human rights issues facing Pakistan today. Key topics of discussion included:

  • Access to Education: Ensuring equal access to quality education, particularly for vulnerable groups, and empowering individuals to shape their future.
  • Rights of Vulnerable Groups: Protecting the rights of marginalized communities, including women, children, minorities, and persons with disabilities.
  • Gender-Based and Conflict-Related Violence: Addressing the challenges posed by gender-based violence and promoting justice for those affected by conflict-related issues.

Throughout the event, participants underscored the essential role human rights play in fostering peace, inclusion, and social cohesion. Speakers outlined actionable steps for advancing human rights in Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of:

  • Public Awareness: Promoting education and raising awareness on human rights issues across all sectors of society.
  • Stronger Legislative Frameworks: Enhancing the legislative structures and institutions that support human rights.
  • Investment in Education and Inclusive Development: Increasing investment in education to create equitable opportunities for all.
  • Civil Society Engagement: Amplifying the role of civil society in democratic governance and social equity.

Several prominent figures shared their perspectives during the conference. Sindh’s Minister for Women Development, Shaheena Shair Ali, expressed the importance of aligning legislative actions with international human rights standards, stating, “Human rights are the foundation for a peaceful and tolerant society.” She emphasized the need for robust legislative frameworks to protect these rights.

Vice Chancellor of SALU, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yousuf Khushk, highlighted the critical role of education in preventing human rights violations, asserting that education is key to promoting democratic values and nurturing a tolerant society.

Representing the HumAhang project, Haseeb Iqbal reiterated the significance of collaboration across all sectors of society. “Collective efforts by all stakeholders are crucial to transforming human rights commitments into concrete action,” Iqbal stated, underscoring the importance of continued partnership in advancing social equity.

The conference concluded on a poignant note with a theatrical performance that depicted the societal challenges surrounding human rights and violence, urging attendees to remain steadfast in their advocacy for human rights and justice.
