US Consul General Highlights Enduring Pakistan-US Partnership During South Punjab Visit
US Consul General in Lahore Stetson Sanders on Wednesday underscored the enduring partnership between the United States and Pakistan during a visit to South Punjab, where he reviewed American-funded initiatives in flood relief, education, and cultural preservation. In flood-affected Jalalpur Pirwala, Sanders visited a health and water, sanitation and hygiene project implemented through UNICEF with US government support, observing child malnutrition screening, distribution of therapeutic food, and the restoration of water and sanitation facilities, while also meeting mothers, caregivers, and frontline health workers.
According to the US mission, Washington has provided one million dollars to UNICEF’s emergency flood response, enabling screening of more than forty four thousand children and treatment for over two thousand three hundred severely malnourished children. The assistance has also supported micronutrient services for more than fifteen thousand mothers, access to safe drinking water for nearly eleven thousand people, and hygiene and disease-prevention outreach to over fifty eight thousand women and children in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Sanders said these efforts are saving lives and reducing long-term health risks, praising UNICEF, the World Food Programme, and local health workers for their response.
In Multan, the consul general inaugurated the US-funded restoration of the historic Ghanta Ghar, calling it a strong example of cooperation in cultural preservation and tourism-led economic development. He also attended a ceremony for four hundred fifty graduates of the US-funded English Access Scholarship Programme from Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan, which aims to improve English-language skills and expand education and employment opportunities for students from underserved communities. Sanders further met members of the Pakistan-US Alumni Network from South Punjab, who shared how exchange programmes have helped them contribute to economic growth, innovation, energy security, and responsible development initiatives in Pakistan.
