US-China Trade Dispute Escalates with Major Tariff Hike

US Escalates Tariffs After China's Defiance

Washington: The trade conflict between the United States and China escalated significantly on Monday, with the White House confirming a sharp increase in tariffs on Chinese goods.

White House Press Secretary announced that a new 104 percent tariff on Chinese imports went into effect at noon Eastern Time, starting April 9. This move follows China’s refusal to remove its 34 percent retaliatory tariffs, prompting the U.S. to impose these higher duties in response.

The tariff increase comes after President Trump’s recent warning to escalate measures if China did not reverse its position. Despite the warning, China remained resolute, leading to a high-stakes escalation in a trade standoff that has already created instability in global markets.

In retaliation, China’s Commerce Ministry criticized the U.S. decision, calling it “a mistake on top of a mistake” and vowing to “fight to the end” in defense of its economic interests.
