Urban Flooding Alert Issued for Islamabad and Northern Punjab

Traffic hazards due to reduced visibility from dust and rain

ISLAMABAD – The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert warning of possible urban flooding in Islamabad and several northern districts of Punjab over the next 2 to 6 hours.

Heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is expected in Murree, Galiyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, and surrounding areas. The alert attributes this extreme weather to the development of towering cumulonimbus cloud systems, fueled by recent high temperatures.

There is also a risk of landslides in hilly and mountainous areas, while urban centers may face flooding, traffic disruptions, and power outages due to falling trees and damage to weak infrastructure.

Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel

  • Stay away from trees and weak structures

  • Park vehicles in secure locations

  • Follow local authorities’ instructions

Meanwhile, in southern Punjab, heavy rains with thunder and strong winds are expected over the next 24 to 48 hours in the following areas:
Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Ahmedpur, Liaqatpur, Zahir Pir, Rajanpur, Khanpur, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, and Sadiqabad.

The NDMA has warned of:

  • Flash flooding in hill streams and low-lying areas

  • Potential landslides in vulnerable zones

  • Traffic hazards due to reduced visibility from dust and rain

  • Risk of damage to weak structures and trees due to strong winds

The public is urged to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during rainstorms, and ensure their vehicles are parked in safe places. Emergency services remain on high alert, and citizens are advised to monitor weather updates and follow official guidance.
