UNDP Expresses Deep Concern Over Devastating Floods in Pakistan, Provides Emergency Relief

UNDP has dispatched emergency relief supplies to some of the hardest-hit areas in KP

ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has expressed profound concern over the tragic loss of life and widespread destruction caused by the recent floods sweeping across Pakistan. Torrential rains and flash floods have claimed hundreds of lives, displaced thousands, and caused severe damage to infrastructure, leaving many communities in urgent need of assistance.

While ongoing relief efforts have saved lives, the situation remains critical. Displaced families are in desperate need of safe shelter, while overcrowded relief camps are facing shortages of healthcare services, clean drinking water, and sanitation facilities. Continued rainfall is also hampering access to remote areas, complicating rescue and relief operations.

In immediate response, UNDP has dispatched emergency relief supplies to some of the hardest-hit areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). These include 180 tents, 103 stretchers, 230 sleeping bags, 130 floodlights, and 53 first aid kits, among other essential items. The distribution is being coordinated closely with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and the KP Planning and Development Department, with supplies being delivered to Nowshera for further distribution based on assessed needs.

“Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods,” said Ms. Van Nguyen, Officer-in-Charge, UNDP Pakistan. “As the crisis unfolds, UNDP is actively assessing needs on the ground to bridge immediate humanitarian gaps while also laying the groundwork for longer-term recovery and resilience.”

Reaffirming its commitment to the people of Pakistan, UNDP emphasized the importance of building stronger, more resilient communities in the face of increasing climate-induced disasters. The organization pledged continued collaboration with the Government of Pakistan, partners, and humanitarian agencies to support the country’s recovery efforts.
