Sports can be a powerful driver for community empowerment, innovation, and economic growth

Islamabad (Web Desk) – Donna Carpenter, co-founder and chair of the board of U.S. snowboarding company Burton Snowboards, visited Pakistan to highlight the power of sports entrepreneurship in youth development and innovation. The visit was part of the U.S. Embassy Islamabad’s Freedom 250 lecture series, aimed at engaging Pakistan’s public on entrepreneurship, the digital economy, and critical minerals.

At an event held on January 28 at the newly constructed United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) headquarters, Carpenter, alongside Pakistani professional athlete Samar Khan—an alumna of the U.S. Department of State’s espnW Global Sports Mentoring Program—met with sports professionals, students, and business leaders.

During the session, both emphasized how sports cultivate leadership, teamwork, and resilience, while creating avenues for young people to contribute positively to their communities. They also discussed how sports entrepreneurship can drive innovation and cross-cultural collaboration.
Andy Halus, U.S. Embassy Minister Counselor for Public Diplomacy, remarked, “Pakistan has a young, energetic population and untapped potential in sports and entrepreneurship. Engaging with students, athletes, and professionals allows us to exchange ideas, foster partnerships, and explore opportunities that benefit both our countries. Sports can be a powerful driver for community empowerment, innovation, and economic growth.”
The Freedom 250 lecture series is part of the U.S. Embassy’s efforts to commemorate 250 years of American independence, bringing distinguished alumni of U.S.-sponsored exchanges, American business leaders, and experts to Pakistan to share knowledge, inspire collaboration, and build lasting partnerships.
