U.S. Authorities Foil Election Day Terror Attack by Afghan National

The U.S. Department of Justice has apprehended an Afghan man named Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, who is accused of plotting an attack on Election Day in the name of the Islamic State (ISIS).
Tawhedi, who resides in Oklahoma City, was allegedly planning a violent attack within the United States, as stated by FBI Director Christopher Wray. Prosecutors allege that Tawhedi was stockpiling firearms and attempting to liquidate his family’s assets in preparation for moving them abroad. He faces multiple charges, including providing and attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and attempting to acquire firearms for terrorist activities.
Authorities claim that Tawhedi conspired with a juvenile relative from Afghanistan and engaged with ISIS propaganda online. He allegedly contributed to a charity that served as a front for ISIS activities.
Tawhedi sought to obtain AK-47 rifles for his planned attack and met with undercover FBI agents on October 7 to purchase weapons and ammunition, which led to his arrest. Following his arrest, he reportedly confirmed his intention to carry out an Election Day attack targeting large crowds and expressed a desire to die in the process.
Having entered the U.S. in September 2021 on a special immigrant visa alongside his wife and child, Tawhedi was living in Oklahoma City at the time of his arrest. It remains unclear whether he has obtained legal representation.
