Two Militants Arrested in Connection with Kurram DC Attack

PESHAWAR: Two militants involved in the attack on Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud in Kurram district have been arrested, authorities confirmed. The arrests were made during a crackdown by local police in Kurram. Sources revealed that the arrested militants were named in the FIR related to the firing incident that targeted the Deputy Commissioner.

The attack took place as the deputy commissioner was traveling in a convoy carrying essential supplies to Kurram. Armed militants opened fire on the convoy, injuring Mehsud, along with a police officer and a Frontier Corps (FC) personnel. The incident occurred despite negotiations being underway between local authorities and militants to clear the road for the convoy’s passage. Mehsud’s condition has since stabilized following treatment.

Following the attack, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa‘s Additional Chief Secretary issued a notification imposing Section 144 in Kurram district for two months, a move aimed at preventing further violence and ensuring peace in the region. The directive includes a ban on public gatherings and the display of weapons, particularly on the district’s main highway. Authorities also vowed to take swift action against those responsible for destabilizing the peace agreement in Kurram.

The attack is believed to be an attempt by militants to disrupt the peace deal that was recently brokered between warring tribes in the region. The peace agreement, finalized by a Grand Jirga, includes measures such as the demolition of bunkers and the collection of arms within 15 days, and is scheduled to be enforced from January 4. However, sit-ins continue in areas like Parachinar and Baggan, where protesters demand better security and compensation for losses incurred during the unrest.

A joint investigation report by police and security agencies has been submitted to the provincial government, and more arrests are expected as the investigation progresses. Authorities are determined to uphold the peace agreement and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
