Authorities in Iran have responded by imposing an almost complete internet shutdown, making it difficult to verify information from inside the country. State media has reported clashes in several cities, blaming the violence on what it described as “terrorist agents” seeking to destabilize the situation.
Human rights groups, however, paint a grim picture. According to independent monitors, at least 36 people have been killed and more than 2,000 arrested since the demonstrations began in late December. Families of detainees remain largely in the dark due to communication restrictions.
The unrest has also started to affect regional travel. Five flights operated by Iranian airlines from Istanbul were canceled, adding to broader disruptions. Airport officials said the decision was taken as a safety precaution, especially ahead of large post-prayer gatherings expected in Iran.
