Turkey’s Erdoğan Avoids Kashmir Issue in UN Speech, Signals Diplomatic Shift

For the first time in years, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan refrained from mentioning the Kashmir issue during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, a move that has been positively received in India.

This omission has raised concerns in Pakistan, signaling a notable shift in Erdoğan’s stance. Many Indian social media users suggested that Turkey’s improving diplomatic ties with India might have played a role in his decision.

Hussain Haqqani, a former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, also weighed in on the matter, noting that Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, was the only leader at the UN General Assembly to address Kashmir.

“For years, Pakistan has advocated for resolving the ‘Kashmir dispute’ based on UN resolutions. But if, out of 193 member states at the UNGA, only Pakistan’s Prime Minister mentions Kashmir, how realistic is the Pakistani sentiment?” Haqqani remarked.

In previous years, Erdoğan consistently raised the Kashmir issue in his UNGA speeches, calling for a resolution to the decades-old dispute. India has regularly countered his statements, urging Turkey to respect its sovereignty.

In past addresses, Erdoğan emphasized the hardships faced by Kashmiris, urging global attention and even suggesting that millions were living under a “virtual blockade.”

Historically, Erdoğan has been a strong supporter of Kashmir at the UN. In his 2020 speech, he condemned India’s removal of Article 370, stating that it had worsened the situation. In 2021, he reiterated Turkey’s long-standing position that the Kashmir conflict should be resolved through dialogue and in accordance with UN resolutions.
