Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs on Canada Over China Trade Deal
Trump warns Canada over China trade ties as Prime Minister Carney defends national interests and domestic economic priorities.
US – Canada & China – (Web Desk) – Former U.S. president Donald Trump has reignited trade tensions with Canada after threatening sweeping tariffs over Ottawa’s recent engagement with China. In a series of posts on Saturday, Trump warned that he would impose 100% tariffs on all Canadian goods if Prime Minister Mark Carney pursued closer economic ties with Beijing. He claimed China would “eat Canada alive” and undermine its domestic industries.
The remarks follow Carney’s January 16 visit to Beijing, where Canada reduced its steep 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles to 6.1% for up to 49,000 units annually. In return, China agreed to ease import duties on key Canadian exports, including canola, lobster, and peas, signaling a partial thaw in bilateral trade relations.
Responding on Sunday, Carney firmly rejected Trump’s accusations, emphasizing that no free trade agreement with China is under consideration. He stressed that Canada remains bound by USMCA rules, which govern trade relations with the United States and Mexico, and said Ottawa’s actions do not violate those commitments.

Carney also highlighted his government’s “Buy Canadian” policy, aimed at strengthening domestic industries, supply chains, and economic resilience. While acknowledging the need to diversify trade partnerships, he reiterated that Canada’s priority remains protecting national interests and maintaining balanced relations with both Washington and Beijing, amid an increasingly complex global trade environment.
