Doha — U.S. President Donald Trump made a brief stopover in Qatar while en route to Malaysia for the ASEAN Summit, where he met the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani aboard his aircraft.
According to international media reports, President Trump praised Qatar’s role in promoting peace in the Middle East, stating, “We have achieved incredible peace in the region, and Qatar has played a major role in it.”
Speaking to reporters later aboard the plane, President Trump expressed optimism about his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying he expects a “great meeting” and believes China will agree to a trade deal to avoid the 100 percent tariffs set to take effect on November 1.
He also discussed the situation in Gaza, emphasizing the need for lasting peace. Trump revealed that a task force is being formed to address the conflict and noted that Qatar is prepared to send peacekeeping forces to Gaza if necessary.
Reiterating his earlier stance, Trump warned Hamas to return the bodies of hostages immediately, saying that if the group fails to comply, other countries involved in the regional peace accord will take action. He added that the United States will closely monitor developments in the next 48 hours.
President Trump is currently on an official visit to Asia, where he will also meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss ending the ongoing trade war between the world’s two largest economies. Additionally, he is scheduled to visit South Korea and Japan.
