Turkish – US – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk0 – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the White House on Thursday for an important meeting with US President Donald Trump. The two leaders, who have known each other for a long time, talked about strengthening the bond between their countries. They covered topics like defense deals, trade, and finding solutions to wars in Gaza, Syria, and Ukraine.
President Trump gave a warm welcome to President Erdogan. He praised the Turkish leader, calling him a “friend” and a “highly respected man” both in his own country and around the world. Trump highlighted their strong personal relationship, which had been much closer than the distance shown by the previous US administration.
Stopping the war in Gaza was a major topic. President Trump said the United States is “close to a deal” to end the fighting. He stressed the need for a ceasefire and for all hostages held in Gaza to be released. Trump plans to discuss this further in a future meeting with Israel’s leader, Benjamin Netanyahu. He also acknowledged Erdogan’s role in trying to bring peace to the region.
The leaders also discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump described the loss of life as a “waste” and called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the war. He also revealed that he asked Erdogan for a big favor: to stop buying oil from Russia. Trump seemed confident that Turkey would agree, suggesting it could buy energy from other countries instead.
A key goal for Turkey was to buy advanced American fighter jets. The US had stopped these sales because Turkey bought a missile defense system from Russia. During the meeting, Trump signaled that he might soon lift the ban and related sanctions, hinting that Erdogan would be “successful in buying the things that he wants to buy,” like F-35 jets.
The meeting also led to several major business deals. Turkey plans to buy 200 passenger planes from American company Boeing. The two countries also signed a huge 20-year deal for the US to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Turkey, worth an estimated $43 billion. This helps Turkey get its energy from sources other than Russia.
On the situation in Syria, President Trump praised Erdogan for his influence and credited him with helping to remove the country’s former leader. The US has eased some sanctions on Syria, partly at Turkey’s request, showing how the two nations are working together more closely in the region.

This meeting is seen as a potential fresh start for US-Turkey relations. After several years of cooler ties, both leaders showed a strong desire to work together on trade, security, and regional peace. While challenges remain, the friendly atmosphere and hints of progress on defense deals suggest a warmer relationship is ahead
