Transporters in Punjab Announce Strike Over Heavy Fines

The strike will affect goods transport, mini buses, loaders, rickshaws

LAHORE: Transporters across Punjab have called a wheel-jam strike for Monday to protest heavy fines under the Traffic Ordinance 2025, demanding its immediate withdrawal by the provincial government.

Speaking at a joint press conference, leaders of the Pakistan Transport United Action Committee criticized the ordinance, calling it “unfair” and claiming that it imposes excessive financial penalties on transporters. “Public transport will remain suspended until the ordinance is withdrawn,” they warned.

The strike will affect goods transport, mini buses, loaders, rickshaws, as well as intra-city, inter-district, and inter-provincial transport services.

The first round of talks between transporters and the Punjab government failed to reach a resolution. The transport association said the next round of talks is scheduled for 2 pm today.

Responding to the strike, Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar stated that the police would not yield to “blackmailing” or pressure. He emphasized that driving without a license invites accidents and death, calling it a “license to kill” that exists nowhere else in the world.

The Punjab police recently intensified enforcement under the ordinance, issuing at least 63,970 challans worth over Rs80 million in 24 hours. According to a police spokesperson, 28,000 challans were issued in a single day for helmet violations, while 4,312 were issued for other traffic rule breaches. Additionally, 23,904 vehicles were confiscated.
