Tragic Bus Accident in Uttarakhand Claims 36 Lives
The bus accident in Almora district, Uttarakhand, has claimed the lives of 36 people. Local authorities reported that the 45-seater bus, traveling from Pauri in Garhwal to Ramnagar in Kumaon, veered off the road and fell into a 200-meter-deep gorge in Marchula early this morning.
Rescue operations are currently underway, with police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams working at the accident site. Many passengers died at the scene, while at least nine others passed away from their injuries after being transported to a hospital. Three critically injured individuals have been airlifted to AIIMS for specialized treatment.
The bus, operated by the Garhwal Motor Owners’ Union, is now under investigation as officials seek to determine the cause of the tragic incident. Authorities from Almora and Ramnagar are present at the location.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his condolences regarding the unfortunate accident and instructed the district administration to accelerate rescue and relief efforts. “I received the very sad news of casualties among passengers in the unfortunate bus accident in Marchula of Almora district. The district administration has been directed to conduct swift relief and rescue operations,” he stated on X.
The chief minister further ordered local authorities and SDRF teams to ensure that the injured are quickly transported to the nearest healthcare facilities and to airlift those in critical condition as necessary. Additionally, he called for the suspension of Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials in the area.
As part of the government’s response, the chief minister announced compensation of 400,000 INR for the families of the deceased and 100,000 INR for those injured. A magisterial inquiry has also been initiated to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
