TikToker;Fake News Peddler Arrested in Lahore

Woman Posed as Grieving Mother, Sparking Outrage and Investigation

Lahore-(Staff Reporter)-A woman who spread fake news on social media about the alleged rape and death of a student from a private college in Lahore has been arrested. The woman, a TikToker, posed as the mother of the student and created a video message intended to mislead the public.

The arrest was made by the Organized Crime Unit Model Town, led by DSP Chaudhry Faisal Sharif and his team, following instructions from DIG Imran Kishor . A 5-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was formed, headed by SP Aftab Ahmed Phalrawan, to investigate the matter on behalf of the Punjab government.

This incident highlights the growing concern of fake news and misinformation on social media platforms. Research has shown that simple interventions can reduce the spread of misinformation by shifting people’s attention toward accuracy ². However, in this case, the woman’s actions were intentional and malicious.

The spread of fake news can have severe consequences, as seen in the case of Esha, a Malaysian social media influencer who faced relentless harassment and eventually took her own life ³. The incident sparked outrage and raised concerns about cyberbullying and the spread of misinformation.

Experts suggest that social media platforms can play a significant role in stopping the spread of misinformation by modifying their reward structures ¹. By promoting accuracy and critical thinking, platforms can encourage users to think twice before sharing information.
