Three TTP Militants Killed in CTD Operation in Lakki Marwat

Balochistan, KP Bear Brunt of Militancy with 82 of 85 Attacks

PESHAWAR— At least three militants affiliated with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were killed in a late-night intelligence-based operation by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, officials said on Saturday.

The operation was conducted around 1 a.m. in Sarai Naurang, near Bhutani Canal, targeting terrorists involved in a series of deadly attacks against police and other law enforcement agencies, the CTD said in a statement.

Security personnel recovered four hand grenades, Kalashnikov rifles, ammunition, and two mobile phones from the site. No injuries or casualties were reported among the security forces.

The raid comes just two days after a deadly bombing in Bajaur’s Tehsil Khar claimed five lives, including Assistant Commissioner Nawagai Faisal Ismail. That attack has heightened concerns over resurgent militancy in the region.

Earlier this week, the CTD also thwarted a major terrorist plot in Peshawar, killing two suspected militants during an operation in the Shamshatoo area of Urmar Payan. Authorities said the suspects were planning a large-scale attack on a high-value target in the provincial capital. A suicide vest, SMG rifle, pistol, and a large cache of ammunition were seized.

Surge in Militancy Nationwide

The latest counterterrorism actions come against the backdrop of a modest but troubling rise in militant violence across Pakistan. According to a monthly report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), militant attacks in May 2025 rose by 5% compared to April, with 85 incidents reported nationwide.

These attacks led to 113 deaths — including 52 security personnel and 46 civilians — and injured 182 people. Of particular concern is the 73% spike in fatalities among security forces and a 145% increase in civilian injuries, suggesting a growing threat to both state institutions and the general public.

Security forces also ramped up operations, killing at least 59 militants in various parts of the country during May. However, five personnel also lost their lives in these confrontations.

Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remained the most affected regions, accounting for 82 out of the 85 attacks. Balochistan saw the highest death toll, with 35 attacks resulting in 51 fatalities — including 30 civilians and 18 security officials — and over 100 injuries.
