Third World Solidarity Pays Tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on 84th Death Anniversary

LONDON: Third World Solidarity (TWS) hosted a commemorative evening in honour of the legendary Indian poet, philosopher, and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, marking the 84th anniversary of his passing. The event celebrated Tagore’s literary brilliance and unwavering commitment to internationalism.

Prominent figures from various walks of life attended and paid tribute to Tagore’s enduring global legacy. Notable speakers included Keith Bennett, co-editor of Socialist Friends of China; Mihir Bose, long-time BBC journalist; Cllr Pritam Grewal, former Mayor of Hounslow; Ziauddin Yousafzai, father of Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai (who joined via video link); and Rita Payne, President Emeritus of the Commonwealth Journalists Association.

Speakers reflected on Tagore’s contributions to literature, education, and his vision for a more interconnected and peaceful world — a vision that earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.

The evening was introduced by Cllr Shahid Nadeem Sandhu, Chair of Pakistanis for Labour and Secretary General of Third World Solidarity. The event was chaired by Hon. Alderman Mushtaq Lasharie CBE, Chair of Third World Solidarity.

The event saw participation from a wide range of community leaders, academics, and cultural figures including TWS-UK President Mian Saleem, Secretary General UK Mona Baig, Dr Reza HoseinBurr, Arshad Chaudhry, Dr Shahzad Qureshi & Mrs Qureshi, Professor Hugh Goodacre, Raja Mazhar Hayat, poetess Tallat Ghill, Jasmine Ahmed, Mushtaq Mashraqi, Wajahat Khan, Sumera Tabsam Quzalbash, G. Islam Nishat, Sue Goodacre, Sakina Quzalbash, Mohammad Sajjad Butt, and others.

The evening concluded with a renewed call to preserve and promote Tagore’s ideals of harmony, cultural exchange, and universal humanism, which continue to inspire generations across the globe.
