Textbook Prices Likely to Rise After Fee Hike

Publishers Warn of Sharp Textbook Price Increase After Fees

Islamabad: (Web Desk) – Textbook prices are expected to rise sharply in the coming months after a substantial increase in NOC and licence renewal fees, triggering concern among publishers, educators, and parents. Industry sources warn that the higher regulatory costs could lead to a significant hike in textbook prices, particularly for books used in private schools.

Publishers say they may have little choice but to increase prices, with estimates suggesting textbooks could become 40 to 50 per cent more expensive if the revised fees are not reconsidered. According to industry representatives, the NOC licence fee has reportedly surged from Rs20,000 to Rs150,000, while licence renewal charges have risen from Rs5,000 to Rs75,000.

Publishers argue that absorbing such steep increases is not feasible and that the added financial burden will ultimately be passed on to consumers. They cautioned that higher textbook prices would place additional strain on household budgets and could negatively affect students’ access to quality education. Industry stakeholders have urged authorities to review the decision to prevent further pressure on parents and the education sector.
