Tensions Rise in Senate Over Arrest of Senator Aon Abbas Buppi

ISLAMABAD: A Senate session in Islamabad on Thursday, presided over by Deputy Chairman Syedul Khan, erupted into heated exchanges as tensions escalated over the arrest of Senator Aon Abbas Buppi. The opposition, led by Senator Shibli Faraz, strongly condemned the arrest, alleging it was politically motivated. The opposition members demanded an explanation from the Law Minister regarding the circumstances of Senator Buppi’s arrest and the possibility of his release.

The situation intensified when Senator Manzoor Kakar engaged in a verbal clash with Deputy Chairman Syedul Khan. Senator Kakar criticized the chair’s actions and emphasized that senators should not be treated as subordinates. In response, Deputy Chairman Syedul Khan reiterated his commitment to conducting the session according to legal procedures.

The protest reached its peak when opposition members staged a walkout, expressing their dissatisfaction with the arrest of Senator Buppi and the perceived undermining of the Senate’s authority. Senator Shibli Faraz raised concerns about the Senate’s proceedings being disrespected, citing unresolved issues like production orders for detained senators and pending resignations, including that of Sania Nishtar.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar later addressed the session, confirming the arrest of Senator Buppi by Bahawalpur police on charges related to the illegal hunting of Chinkara deer. He assured the Senate that he had requested a detailed report on the matter and would ensure that Senator Buppi received all necessary legal support.

The session became more chaotic when opposition senators, including Aon Abbas Buppi, Humayun Mohmand, and Falak Naz Chitrali, staged protests near the chairman’s dais. Their actions led to their suspension for the remainder of the session by Deputy Chairman Syedul Khan. Opposition senators also chanted for the return of Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani and the resignation of the Deputy Chairman, highlighting the deepening rift between the opposition and the government.

This incident underscores the rising tensions in Pakistan’s political landscape, raising concerns about the future of parliamentary proceedings and the functioning of the Senate.
