Telegram CEO Pavel Durov Banned from Leaving France

French authorities have charged Telegram CEO Pavel Durov with preliminary offenses related to the alleged misuse of his messaging app. Durov, who holds French citizenship, was detained on Saturday at Le Bourget airport near Paris as part of an extensive investigation that began last month. He was released after four days of questioning, but has been slapped with charges and required to pay a €5 million bail. Additionally, he must report to a police station twice a week.

The charges against Durov include accusations that Telegram has been used for distributing child sexual abuse material and trafficking drugs. Authorities also claim that Telegram has not complied with legal demands to provide information or documents to investigators.

Durov’s detention has sparked outrage in Russia, with some officials suggesting the charges are politically motivated and indicative of Western hypocrisy regarding free speech. This reaction is notable given that in 2018, Russian authorities attempted to ban Telegram but reversed their decision in 2020.
