Shakib’s record-breaking achievement came during a Super 8 Group 1 clash against India

India claimed on Saturday their second Super Eight win after defeating Bangladesh by 50 runs in ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 at t the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua.

Kuldeep Yadav claimed three-wicket haul while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh took two wickets each, restricting the Tigers to 146 runs as they were chasing a tough target of 197 runs.

Najmul Hossain Shanto remained top scorer with 40 runs while Tanzid Hasan made 29 runs and Rishad Hossain 24.

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bowl first.

India set a target of 197 runs for the Bengal Tigers. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli built a strong opening stand as they made 23 and 37, respectively. Rishab Pant scored 36 while Yadav dismissed for six.

Later, Shivam Dube (34) and Hardik Pandya (50) stitched a fifth wicket partnership, helping their side set tough target for Tigers.

India secured top spot in Group A and they opened their Super Eight account with an impressive 47-run win against Afghanistan.

Bangladesh finished runners-up in Group C behind South Africa but they suffered defeat in their Super Eight match against Australia.

In a historic feat, Bangladesh’s premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan etched his name in the annals of cricketing history by becoming the first bowler to claim 50 wickets in the T20 World Cup.

The record-breaking achievement came during a Super 8 Group 1 clash against India at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Saturday.

Shakib, known for his exceptional all-round abilities, reached the milestone by dismissing Indian skipper Rohit Sharma in the fourth over of India’s innings. The crucial breakthrough not only underlined Shakib’s prowess with the ball but also his significance in Bangladesh’s T20 setup.

As of this historic moment, Shakib leads the list of all-time wicket-takers in T20 World Cups with 50 wickets. He is followed by Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi with 39 wickets, Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga with 38, Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga with 37, and Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal with 36.

Shakib’s illustrious T20I career also sees him as the second-highest wicket-taker in all T20 Internationals, boasting 148 wickets in 128 matches. He trails only New Zealand’s Tim Southee, who has 164 wickets to his name.
