Syrian army and SDF agree to a truce in Aleppo neighborhoods
Clashes in Aleppo neighborhoods lead to a fragile truce, straining a landmark deal to integrate Kurdish-led forces.
Syrian – Israel – (Special correspondent / Web Desk) – A ceasefire is now in place in the Syrian city of Aleppo after intense fighting between the Syrian army and the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The clashes in the Sheikh Maqsoud and al-Ashrafieh neighborhoods resulted in casualties, with one member of the internal security forces killed and several others injured, alongside civilian casualties. The Syrian army described its movements as a planned redeployment, while the SDF denied attacking checkpoints and instead accused government forces of laying siege to Kurdish-held districts with tanks.
Following the violence, a truce was reached to calm the situation. This recent clash threatens a landmark March deal, brokered by the US that aims to integrate the Kurdish-led forces into the state’s institutions. Progress on this plan has stalled, with both sides blaming each other for provocations.
The hostilities in Aleppo cast a shadow over a national milestone, as Syria also announced the results of its first parliamentary election since the fall of former leader Bashar al-Assad. This election, however, was not held in all parts of the country, as the vote was postponed in Kurdish-held areas and the Druze-majority province of Suwayda.
