Supreme Court resumed hearing Arshad Sharif murder case, formed five-member JIT to submit report
Islamabad: (Staff Reporter) The Supreme Court (SC) has resumed hearing into suo moto notice of journalist Arshad Sharif’s murder case. SC directed newly formed joint investigation team (JIT) to submit an interim report on the murder senior journalist Arshad Sharif in two weeks.
According to the source, a five-member bench headed by Justice Umar Ata Bandial issued the order while hearing a suo moto case takes over a month after Mr. Sharif was gunned down by the Kenyan police in a suspected mistaken identity case. During today’s hearing, Additional Attorney General Amir Rehman submitted a notification of new JIT, which was formed in line with the orders of the top court. The probe team comprises five-members, DIG IB Sajid Kiyani, FIA’s Waqaruddin Syed, MI’s Murtaza Afzal, ISI’s Mohammad Aslam and DIG FIA Awais Ahmed.
Furthermore the SC on Wednesday directed the government to form new Joint Investigation Team comprising intelligence officials to probe the killing of journalist Arshad Sharif’s murder. The court rejected the JIT earlier formed by the Islamabad police. CJP Bandial ordered the federal government to immediately form a new independent investigation team whose members should not have any connections with any influential person.
Moreover the additional attorney general said “the court that prime suspects, including Waqar Ahmed and Khurram Ahmed, would be brought back to Pakistan through Interpol if needed. He said whole investigation into the murder case solely depended on cooperation of Kenyan authorities.”
Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs submitted its reply to the Supreme Court in the suo moto case hearing of Arshad Sharif’s murder in Kenya The foreign ministry informed that the prime minster has also contacted the Kenyan president in this regard. The ministry expressed its hope that the mystery of Arshad Sharif’s murder would soon be resolved.
The Supreme Court has been told that a special delegation is being sent to Kenya and efforts are afoot to establish contacts between the foreign ministers of two countries.
