Sugar prices in Lahore rise despite government efforts
Sugar mills owe growers huge amount, report reveals
Lahore-(Special Correspondent/Web desk) Sugar supply has returned to the city, but the official price is still not being fully followed. In big markets, strict checks have brought rates down to the government’s Rs173 per kilo. However, in local shops, sugar is still selling for as high as Rs200 per kilo. Officials say over 3,700 raids have been carried out across Punjab in the crackdown on costly sugar. So far, 2,326 people have been arrested and 385 cases registered. The Punjab Cane Commissioner’s 2024-25 audit report also shows sugar mills still owe farmers more than Rs3 billion.
During the 2023-24 fiscal year, sugar mill owners failed to pay Rs3.0469 billion to sugarcane growers. This is despite a legal requirement to make full payment within 15 days of purchase.
The audit report also found that mills purchased sugarcane at prices lower than the official government rate, breaking pricing rules meant to protect farmers.Top 10 countries with largest military aircraft fleets; here’s where Pakistan stands
The total amount still owed to farmers has now crossed Rs3.05 billion, leaving many growers struggling to recover their dues.
The Punjab Cane Commissioner’s audit highlighted these issues and informed the relevant department in October 2024. However, according to the report, there was no response from the department until December 2024, when the audit was completed.
