Starlink Plans 2027 Launch of Advanced Direct-to-Cell Satellite Network

NEW YORK: (Web Desk) – Starlink announced plans to begin launching its second-generation satellites in 2027, enabling “direct-to-cell” connectivity without relying on ground antennas. Michael Nicolls, Starlink’s vice president for engineering, confirmed the project at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, highlighting that the new constellation will initially consist of 1,200 satellites.

“These satellites aim to provide terrestrial-like connectivity directly through the satellite system,” Nicolls explained, noting that service is expected to begin approximately six months after the first launch. Starship, SpaceX’s super-heavy launch rocket, will be used to deploy the constellation quickly and efficiently.

Currently, Starlink operates over 9,000 satellites, including roughly 600 equipped with limited “direct-to-cell” technology. The company, owned by Elon Musk, has partnered with multiple cellular network operators to expand access and is working closely with phone manufacturers to ensure widespread device compatibility.

Nicolls also revealed that the second-generation satellites may use the frequencies Starlink acquired from US operator EchoStar in November 2025 for $17 billion, pending regulatory approval. The move is expected to significantly enhance Starlink Mobile’s coverage and performance.
