South Africa Names Experienced Squad for Upcoming Champions Trophy
CAPE TOWN: South Africa has unveiled an experienced 15-man squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan, with a strong core of players who featured in the 2023 World Cup. The squad, captained by Temba Bavuma, features 10 players from the recent World Cup campaign, underscoring the team’s focus on continuity and experience for the prestigious tournament.
The South African team will begin their Champions Trophy campaign with a pool match against Afghanistan in Karachi on February 21, followed by a clash with Australia in Rawalpindi on February 25. They will return to Karachi for their final group-stage match against England on March 1.
Coach Rob Walter expressed confidence in the squad, emphasizing the invaluable experience that many players bring to the team. “This squad boasts a wealth of experience, with many players having consistently performed in high-pressure situations. That kind of experience is invaluable in a tournament like this,” he said during a virtual press conference.
Walter also highlighted the squad’s blend of seasoned players and emerging talent, adding, “We’ve managed to maintain the core group of our 2023 World Cup squad, while adding fresh talent. Our recent performances show that we’re capable of reaching the latter stages of global tournaments. We’re eager to take the next step and go even further in pursuit of the coveted silverware.”

The squad includes the return of fast bowler Anrich Nortje, who missed the World Cup due to a toe injury, and seamer Lungi Ngidi, who has overcome a groin issue after missing South Africa’s recent home series against Pakistan.
