Somalia Negotiates Deal For JF-17 Fighter Jets
Somalia Eyes JF-17 Jets From Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – Somalia is reportedly in advanced discussions with Pakistan to acquire up to 24 JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets, in what could become the country’s most significant military investment in decades.
The negotiations gained momentum following a high-level visit to Islamabad by Somali Defence Minister Mohamud Sheikh Ali, where both sides explored options for rebuilding Somalia’s air combat capability. For a nation located in the strategically crucial Horn of Africa, strengthening air defence is seen as a key step toward asserting sovereignty over its airspace.
If finalized, the proposed deal is estimated to be worth around $900 million. The acquisition would mark Somalia’s most ambitious defence purchase since the Cold War era and signal a major effort to revive an independent and modern air force after years of instability.
The JF-17 Block III, jointly developed by Pakistan and China, is priced at approximately $30–40 million per aircraft. Defence analysts describe it as a cost-effective multirole fighter offering advanced avionics, modern radar systems, and integrated weapons capability at a fraction of the cost of many Western alternatives.

Pakistani defence officials have highlighted the financial and strategic appeal of the aircraft, noting that Western jets can cost more than three times as much. The JF-17 platform also includes training, maintenance, and logistical support packages, making it an attractive option for countries seeking to modernize their air forces without overwhelming financial burdens.
If concluded, the agreement could significantly reshape Somalia’s defence posture and strengthen defence ties between the two nations.
