Sindh(Special Correspondent/Webdesk): Sindh province is grappling with a worsening public health issue, with over 226,000 cases of dog bites reported this year, according to official figures.
The rising population of stray dogs has led to an increase in dog bite incidents, resulting in the deaths of 12 people due to rabies and other related diseases.
The highest number of cases occurred between January and September, with 27,333 cases in January, 27,473 in February, and 29,426 in March. Although the numbers declined slightly during the summer months, with 22,558 cases in July, 22,575 in August, and over 24,000 in September, an average of 120 dog bites are still being reported daily across the province.
Health professionals stress the importance of immediate medical attention after a dog bite. The wound should be thoroughly washed with soap and clean water for at least 15 minutes to remove dirt and bacteria. After drying the area, antiseptic cream should be applied, and the wound should be covered with a bandage. Consulting a doctor promptly is essential, particularly in cases involving stray dogs, as rabies vaccinations may be required.
There is growing pressure on the Sindh government to implement measures to control the stray dog population and to enhance access to medical care and vaccinations to prevent further fatalities.
