Sindh CM Murad gives nod to Karachi Safe City Phase-II

Over 2,300 cameras, 10 drones and 50 panic buttons coming to Karachi as government rolls out Rs 9.98 billion security upgrade

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has given the go-ahead for Phase II of the Karachi Safe City Project. The decision came on Friday during a meeting held in Karachi.

Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah and IG Police Javed Odho were all present at the meeting. Several other senior officials also attended.

Speaking at the meeting, the Chief Minister said keeping people safe is the government’s top job. He said the project will help police work better and catch criminals faster. “Modern technology is no longer optional. It is the need of the time,” he said.

The cameras will spread across different parts of Karachi. South District gets the most, with 322 cameras. East District will have 220. Korangi gets 27, Kemari 17, Malir 16 and West District will get 1.

The project also includes 50 panic buttons for the public in case of emergency. Nine control centres will be set up. Solar panels and generators will keep everything running even during power cuts. Eight response vehicles and a smart surveillance tower are also part of the plan.

The total cost is Rs 9.98 billion. The work is expected to finish within 12 months. The official launch is planned for May 2026.

Murad Ali Shah wrapped up the meeting with a clear message. He said this is not just another project on paper. It is a real step toward making Karachi safer for every person who lives there.

CM Sindh directed relevant agencies to expedite work and project should be completed on time because delay may increase cost.

Murad Ali Shah approved transparent and merit-based recruitment of technical staff to Sindh Safe City Authority.

Meeting also considered proposal to launch Safe City project in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas and Shaheed Benazirabad.

Project to install 780 cameras in Karachi and other divisional headquarters will cost Rs3.15 billion.

All safe city projects in the province should be run through an integrated system, namely Sindh Safe Cities Authority, Murad Ali Shah said.

He said an integrated command and control system is the only guarantee of effective security.

The safe city project will not only prove helpful in preventing crimes but will also improve traffic management and emergency services, Murad Ali Shah said.

He said the Sindh government’s commitment to making Karachi a modern, peaceful and strong economic hub will surely be fulfilled.
