Karachi: Sindh Assembly calls for legislation against rising drug Use in edu institutions. The Sindh Assembly has called for urgent legislation to combat the escalating drug use in educational institutions. Deputy Speaker Naveed Anthony has referred the matter to the Sindh Cabinet, which is expected to draft appropriate laws soon.

During a discussion on a motion in the assembly session, Sindh Health Minister Azra Afzal Pechuho highlighted the increasing drug use among students, exacerbated by exam pressures. She noted that children are easily obtaining drugs online and are becoming addicted within school environments. She highlighted the signs of drug use, including mood swings and overdose incidents, and revealed that children as young as ten are involved in drug-related activities. Pechuho also emphasized the role of parental influence, stating that children often mimic the drug habits of their parents.

Speaking on the motion, Nida Khuhro advocated for a comprehensive approach to the drug problem, including drug testing in schools and establishing protocols to address the issue. Marvi Rashdi noted that drug use is more prevalent in private schools, where students use drugs to appear “cool.”

Sardar Khan Chandio highlighted the widespread drug cultivation and use in rural Sindh, sharing that opium is being grown on large scales in various villages.
