Shutter down strike in Azad Kashmir against Presidential Ordinance

MUZAFFARABAD: A complete shutter-down strike is underway in Azad Kashmir as part of a protest against the presidential ordinance that imposes restrictions on public protests and gatherings. The strike, called by the Public Action Committee, has led to the closure of businesses, markets, and educational institutions across various districts, including Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, Bagh, Barala, and Neelum Valley.

The strike has also disrupted inter-district and inter-provincial traffic, with buses and vehicles halted as a result of the protests. The Public Action Committee has stated that the protests are in response to the presidential ordinance, which they claim infringes upon the freedom of expression. According to the committee, several citizens have been arrested during the protests.

The controversial ordinance, enacted by the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government a month ago, bans protests, rallies, and demonstrations. Violating the ordinance can lead to a sentence of up to seven years in prison. However, just a day before the strike, the Supreme Court of Azad Jammu and Kashmir temporarily suspended the ordinance, providing a significant development in the ongoing dispute.
