Shubman Gill Reflects on Pressure Ahead of Champions Trophy Final Against New Zealand

Gill Reflects on 2023 World Cup Loss, Emphasizes Team Morale

DUBAI: Indian opener Shubman Gill addressed the challenges of playing in big matches as his team prepares for the final of the Champions Trophy against New Zealand. Ahead of the crucial game, Gill spoke about the pressures of performing in high-stakes situations, especially in ICC events.

“It’s not always possible to score fifty or a century in every game,” Gill admitted. “I am playing in my second ICC event, and there’s always pressure in big games. The team that handles that pressure the best emerges victorious.”

He further emphasized the mental aspect of handling pressure, stating, “It’s easy to say, but managing the pressure is a big deal. The current Indian batting lineup is great.”

When asked about the significance of the toss, Gill downplayed its importance, stating that players are always ready for their roles. “There’s no importance of the toss. As a player, you get ready for batting,” he said.

Reflecting on India’s recent loss to Australia in the 2023 World Cup final, Gill acknowledged the team’s collective effort to boost morale. “We lost the final of the 2023 World Cup, but everybody is boosting each other’s morale in the team,” he said.

Right now, our focus is to win the Champions Trophy,” said Gill. He speculated, “Maybe Rohit Sharma will make any decision after tomorrow’s match.”

With the Champions Trophy final fast approaching, all eyes are on India as they look to bounce back from their previous World Cup disappointment and secure another ICC title.
