Shoaib Malik Turns Down Selector Role Ahead of T20 World Cup

Focus Shifts to Mentoring Fringe Players for Upcoming Champions Cup

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik disclosed on Thursday that he turned down an offer to become a selector for the T20 World Cup, which took place in the Caribbean and the United States in June.

At a press conference in Lahore, Malik explained that his focus is on improving the fitness of emerging players. “My goal in accepting the mentor role for the Champions Cup was to help fringe players develop their skills,” he said.

Malik expressed his commitment to giving back to the sport: “I aim to repay Pakistan for the opportunities I’ve been given through this role.”

Regarding the upcoming Champions Cup, Malik mentioned that players from various age groups, including U-19 and those around 25-26 years old, will be participating. He emphasized his intention to select a captain who will be a valuable asset for Pakistan in the future.

Malik noted that Ahmed Shehzad is included in the tournament, but Umar Akmal has chosen not to participate. He also reiterated his decision to retire from Pakistan’s national cricket team, stating, “I have already retired from red-ball cricket and ODIs.”

Reflecting on his past with the Stallions in domestic cricket, Malik shared, “I have many fond memories associated with the Stallions and I am determined to achieve great things for this team as well.”
