Shehbaz Sharif Meets British PM to Strengthen Trade and Investment Ties

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where both leaders discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations, particularly in trade and investment.

During the meeting, PM Sharif briefed his British counterpart on Pakistan’s current economic challenges and the government’s strategies to promote growth. He highlighted the recent tax reforms introduced by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to expand the tax base and improve revenue collection.

The discussion also addressed the climate change crisis affecting Pakistan. PM Sharif detailed the adverse impacts of environmental shifts on the country and called for global collaboration to combat these challenges. He also stressed Pakistan’s significant contributions to the fight against terrorism, noting that it remains a global threat requiring collective international action.

Shehbaz Sharif underscored the importance of the UK as Pakistan’s third-largest investor, emphasizing opportunities for further investment in various projects. He also recognized the valuable contributions of the Pakistani diaspora in the UK, highlighting their role in strengthening ties between the two nations and expressing a desire to foster closer people-to-people connections.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors.

Later that day, PM Sharif also met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia’ Al-Sudani. The two leaders discussed ways to further deepen bilateral relations and explore new areas for collaboration.

PM Sharif praised the strong historical, cultural, and religious ties between Pakistan and Iraq, commending Iraq’s arrangements for Pakistani pilgrims. Both leaders emphasized their shared views on global issues and vowed to work together through international platforms like the UN and OIC to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.
