Shehbaz, Modi Set to Share UNGA Stage Amid US Mediation Hints
Islamabad-(Mudassar Iqbal/Web Desk)-The 80th Annual Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is poised to become a significant diplomatic stage, with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to address the high-level debate on September 26.

Breaking from tradition, India will be represented this year not by its foreign minister but by Prime Minister Modi himself, underscoring the weight New Delhi attaches to the session. According to the UN’s provisional schedule, Pakistan will speak immediately after India, offering Islamabad a strategic chance to directly counter New Delhi’s narrative.
Diplomatic sources confirmed that Pakistan intends to highlight key issues, including Kashmir, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and regional peace, during its address. This sequencing allows Pakistan to counter India’s position immediately, while India is expected to exercise its Right of Reply in response. Pakistan’s Saima Saleem will present Islamabad’s official rebuttal if required.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will lead Pakistan’s delegation, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Advisor to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi. Officials say the event will be one of the most significant diplomatic gatherings in recent years, given ongoing crises such as the Israel-Iran conflict over Gaza, the Ukraine war, and heightened Pak-India tensions.

Sources suggest the United States may also attempt quiet backdoor diplomacy between Pakistan and India on the sidelines of the UNGA session. With both South Asian rivals present at the same high-level platform, observers believe Washington could push for dialogue to ease regional tensions.
The 80th session officially opens on September 9, 2025, with the general debate scheduled from September 23 to 29. A climate-related event will be held on September 24, while September 26 will also feature a high-level meeting to mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
