Shandur Polo Festival
Written by: Mohammad Nasr
The Shandur Polo Festival is a historical and cultural event that has been played between Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan for centuries. The festival is a joyous occasion for the people of both the regions, where they showcase their skills, will to win and spirit of friendship. This beautiful field of Shandur has been witnessing these historic competitions every year.
In the last few decades, the festival gained a lot of popularity due to the government’s interest. But along with it came complications. The funds allocated for the festival have been widely criticized for being misused by government officials. This year, the government has delayed the festival and no date has been set yet.
As a son of Gilgit Baltistan, I believe that this festival should be organized by the people of Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan. As in the olden days, there should be an unfettered and free-style polo competition. When the government and its agencies do not interfere, there will be no need for any kind of security that is only for government officials.

This festival is an expression of friendship and brotherhood among people and should be allowed to be organized by people themselves. Shandur Polo Festival needs to be celebrated again with the same freedom, excitement and in its ancient style. This will not only protect our culture but also help keep our traditions alive.
