Lahore: Shafqat Mahmood, a senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former federal minister, has announced his retirement from politics.
In a message posted on social media, Mahmood shared, “Thirty-four years ago, I resigned from my government job to enter politics. After much deliberation, I have decided to retire from politics.”
Mahmood expressed his desire to dedicate the rest of his life to writing and teaching. He clarified that this decision was not due to any pressure nor was he planning to join another political party. “This announcement is solely about stepping away from politics, dictated by time and age,” he said.
Reflecting on his political journey, Mahmood agreed with those who believe that young people should lead in politics. He recounted the many ups and downs he faced, serving as a member of both the Senate and National Assembly, and as a federal and provincial minister.
“I even had the experience of imprisonment. I am content knowing I always performed my duties with utmost honesty, viewing each position as a responsibility. I am grateful that no one has ever accused me of any wrongdoing,” he stated.
Mahmood highlighted his tenure as the Minister of Education, where for the first time in Pakistan’s history, a uniform curriculum was established, and the education system was successfully managed during the challenging COVID-19 period. He thanked the Chairman of PTI for giving him the opportunity to serve.
