ISLAMABAD: A severe cold wave has gripped Pakistan, with temperatures plunging to record lows across the country. The upper regions are experiencing intense cold, and snow has blanketed many areas, particularly in Gilgit-Baltistan, where temperatures have dropped to as low as -10°C. In Ghizer, frozen waterfalls and lakes, including the famous Khalti Lake, are attracting tourists and children eager to witness the icy landscape.
The coldest recorded temperature was in Skardu, where it reached a chilling -11°C, while Gupis experienced -9°C. Light snowfall in the mountains has enhanced the beauty of the Kaghan Valley, with many tourists flocking to Shogran to enjoy the winter scenery.
Snowfall has also impacted Swat, with temperatures in areas like Malam Jabba and Kalam falling below freezing. Balochistan is facing extreme cold as well, with temperatures in Quetta dipping to -5°C and Kalat to -6°C, causing ponds and water on roads to freeze.
Even Karachi, typically known for its milder climate, has witnessed a significant drop in temperature. Nighttime lows have fallen to 9°C, with morning temperatures around 11°C.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted that the cold weather will persist across the country, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with the possibility of rain in Punjab starting tomorrow. The ongoing cold wave is expected to continue affecting daily life in many regions, with warnings in place for potential frost and icy conditions.
