SESSI Central Medical Store: An Important Step Toward Workers’ Health

(By Dr. Muhammad Tayyab Khan Singhanvi, Ph.D)

Workers are the fundamental pillar of the economic and social structure of any society. The rotation of industries, the movement of the economy, and the grand claims of development are in fact the result of the hard work of those hands that labor day and night in factories, workshops, and industrial zones. Unfortunately, in our country the working class is often deprived of basic facilities, particularly access to quality healthcare. In such circumstances, when a state institution takes practical and effective steps for the welfare of workers, it is not only a positive development but also strengthens the bond of trust between the state and the laboring class.

A recent important decision by the Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution (SESSI) is a notable example in this regard. Under the leadership of its commissioner, Hadi Bakhsh Kalhoro, the initiative to establish a Central Medical Store for social security reflects a serious effort to improve workers’ healthcare in practical terms rather than limiting it to administrative paperwork. In the past, officials from around six hospitals and seven circles purchased medicines separately. With the introduction of centralized purchasing, both the procurement process and the quality of medicines are expected to improve. The decision to establish the Central Medical Store at the Landhi Kidney Center may appear to be an administrative step, but its impact could be far-reaching.

In Pakistan, a common complaint regarding public institutions has been the lack of transparency and effective monitoring in the procurement, distribution, and supply of medicines. As a result, medicines often fail to reach deserving patients on time, or complications arise within the supply chain. Establishing a centralized medical store, where the purchase and distribution of medicines can be managed in an organized manner, can significantly enhance administrative transparency and ensure proper use of resources.

The Central Medical Store being established at the Landhi Kidney Center reflects precisely this approach. Through this initiative, efforts are being made to ensure that procurement orders issued from the Social Security head office remain free from unnecessary interference or alteration. When the processes of purchasing and supply operate under a structured and centralized system, the chances of mismanagement, delays, and potential irregularities are greatly reduced. For this reason, labor organizations and field-level representatives have welcomed the decision.

The joint statement issued by labor leaders reflects the sense of appreciation that the working class feels regarding this initiative. They not only described the commissioner’s decision as visionary but also emphasized that such steps strengthen workers’ trust in the system. When leaders representing workers publicly endorse a government initiative, it indicates that the decision has the potential to bring real improvements to workers’ lives.

It is also noteworthy that this project was not the effort of a single individual or office. Rather, it is the result of the collective efforts of several responsible figures working at different levels. The patronage of Provincial Labour Minister Saeed Ghani, the administrative leadership of Commissioner Hadi Bakhsh Kalhoro, and the professional contributions of Medical Advisor Dr. Kamran Awan, along with other officials, played an important role in turning this project into reality. In any public institution, reforms become possible only when there is coordination from policy-making to implementation.

Transparency and discipline in the healthcare sector are essential. When clear rules and effective oversight exist in the procurement and supply of medicines, it not only prevents the wastage of resources but also ensures that patients receive timely and quality treatment. Since the working class generally has limited financial resources, the effectiveness of institutions such as social security becomes even more important. If these institutions function efficiently, the health and quality of life of thousands of families can be improved.

The establishment of the Central Medical Store is an important step in this direction. Through it, medicines can be supplied to social security hospitals and medical centers in a more organized and efficient manner. A stable supply system will also make it easier for doctors and medical staff to perform their duties, while patients will no longer have to face repeated problems of medicine shortages. Thus, this initiative will not only improve administration but also contribute directly to better standards of patient care.

Another important dimension of this project is the restoration of workers’ trust. In the past, labor organizations had pointed out certain shortcomings in the social security system. When the institution itself takes steps toward reform, it demonstrates a genuine commitment to improving the system. Workers’ trust is fundamental to the success of any welfare structure, and this trust is earned not through announcements but through practical action.

In this context, labor leaders have respectfully requested the Social Security Commissioner to arrange the formal inauguration of the Central Medical Store at the Landhi Kidney Center as soon as possible. An inauguration ceremony would serve as a symbolic step, conveying the message that Social Security is serious about improving healthcare services for workers. It would also communicate clearly to field offices and labor organizations that the institution considers workers’ welfare its top priority.

From a broader perspective, such initiatives represent a positive step toward strengthening the labor welfare system in Pakistan. In developed countries, comprehensive systems exist for workers’ healthcare, pensions, and social protection, ensuring secure and dignified lives. While Pakistan does have similar institutions, there has always been a need to make them more effective and active. Projects like the Central Medical Store are a practical response to that need.

It is also true that the real measure of any institution’s performance lies in its results. If this project continues with the same spirit of transparency and commitment with which it has been initiated, it can bring significant improvements to the Social Security healthcare system. As a result, not only will the medicine supply system improve, but the working class will also feel that state institutions are genuinely working for their welfare.

Ultimately, it is hoped that the Central Medical Store established in Landhi will become an effective and exemplary model in the future. If the system continues to operate on the principles of transparency, discipline, and professional integrity, it will not only strengthen the reputation of the Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution but will also become an important milestone in providing better healthcare facilities to workers.
